Hello everyone, my name is Jason Sommerfeldt, but all my friends (and editors) call me J.R. As you can tell from my devotionals, I am a gamer, but that is only a small fraction of my identity. I am first and foremost a child of the Living God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Apart from that, I am nothing.
My wife and I live in Quincy, Illinois with our two children and a plethora of animals (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, you know how it works). I am a pastor, teacher, and writer; really, I am none of these without the others. Along with the small congregation that I minister to here in Quincy, I also volunteer as a chaplain at a local hospital. The Lord has been good to me, and I am blessed to give what I can in order to share those blessings with others.
This website is a product of a lifetime of gaming and faith. As a 30-something, I grew up with what is considered “retro” video games today, and that helped to fuel a passion that has not dissipated as I entered into the ministry. I know that our world is changing, and so is the way that we are entertained. Video games have gone from being an escape to become a full-fledged cultural phenomenon, creating a new sub-sect of fans known as gamers. This is how I connect the Gospel with their culture. If Jesus did it that way during his time on earth, I should do the same.
My name is J.R. and I’m a Christian gamer!
